My Skip-Hop Duo Double Diaper Bag – and Why I Never Use It

When I was pregnant, I was on the hunt for the perfect diaper bag. We had specific requirements – big enough to hold the extensive list of things I planned on packing in it, lots of pockets to organize the aforementioned things, and a nice neutral color and pattern so that daddy wouldn’t mind carrying it and so we could reuse it with our next child. After searching and searching, I still hadn’t found one that was just right. Then, one day as we browsed around Target, we found this Skip Hop Duo Double Deluxe Diaper Bag on the clearance rack for less than 40 bucks! It had been bought online and returned in store, and since they don’t stock it in my local store, it was on clearance. It is priced on Amazon at 79.99 – Score! And, the cherry on top was the perfect color and pattern, onyx tile – it was exactly what I had searched for.

I lovingly packed the diaper bag for Jake’s big arrival. And for a few weeks, we carried it religiously. Then, one day, as I was attempting to wrangle the huge diaper bag and his car seat, I wondered to myself Why? I breastfeed, so we weren’t carrying around bottles and formula, and how much do I really need to carry for an hour or two out? 12 diapers and 6 outfits might be overkill. An entire mini collection of his bath time products probably isn’t going to get used in the car or the grocery store. So, I grabbed 1 outfit, 2 diapers, some wipes, and my nursing cover, and we left the house. And after that first successful outing without everything we owned coming with us, I knew it had been a first-time mom mistake to buy and carry that giant bag everyday. I dug through my closet and found a small canvas bag that we started using instead.

I really do like my Skip-Hop bag. We do use it every now and then, like if we go away for a weekend and need the extra stuff. And I think that we would probably use it a ton if we had 2 littles running around. But for just our little boy, we don’t need so much stuff on an average day.
